Online Magazines and Resources

At Adoption Connection, we encourage you to educate yourself on adoption before beginning your journey, during and as a lifelong process! There are a great number of resources on the internet or your local library about adoption but sometimes it is difficult to know where to begin or how to avoid information overload! Here are some good websites for starters:
  • National Adoption Information Clearinghouse (childwelfare.gov) — Has excellent adoption-related articles on comparing types of adoption, affording adoption, impact of adoption on members of the triad and more. Good summary of adoption laws by state.
  • AdoptUSKids (adoptuskids.org) — National photo listing service for children awaiting adoption across the United States, other helpful resources for those starting out.
  • National Council for Adoption (adoptioncouncil.org) — Long-standing agency focused on global advocacy, education, research, legislative action, and collaboration in adoption. Excellent conferences, resources.
  • Adoptive Families Magazine (adoptivefamilies.org and buildingyourfamily.com) — Respected resource for pre and post-adoption information, articles, forums and more. If you have a question about adoption, AF probably has addressed it — great stuff on talking to kids about adoption, advocacy with schools and more! Subscription highly recommended!!
  • North American Council on Adoptable Children (nacac.org) — Probably the leading national experts on adoption subsidy and adoption tax credit, advocacy agency for all types of adoption.
  • Iowa Foster and Adoptive Parent Association (ifapa.org) — Free membership for all Iowa adoptive families, provides free training on adoption, parenting and special needs of adopted children. Excellent weekly e-newsletter!
  • Iowa Association of Adoption Agencies (adoption.com) — find out about member agencies in Iowa and the services they provide.
  • Iowa KidsNet: Recruitment agency for Iowa foster / adopt families, has photolistings of Iowa children waiting for a forever family.

Don't Forget Good Old-Fashioned Conversation

Also, talking to friends and family about your interest in adoption will give you a surprising wealth of information about their adoption experiences — you will be amazed at how many people you already know who have a connection to adoption!

Remember again that every adoption is very unique to those involved and what may have worked well for Beth and Jamie may not work well for you! Also, different types of adoption (international, special needs, etc.) have different requirements. As the saying goes, “the more you learn, the more you know!”
